A place to talk about developer life and career

AI Overwhelm? Job Fears? How One Developer (Like You!) Mastered AI with a Simple Process

If you’re a software developer, the fast rise of AI tools like Cursor might feel a bit overwhelming. New technology is changing quickly, and you might wonder: “Will AI take my job?” or “How can I keep up?”

Fabio, a Staff Software Engineer, felt this too. When he first saw powerful AI tools, he thought, “Damn, but this is my job!” Many developers share this concern.

But Fabio’s story is one of hope and empowerment. He didn’t just learn to use AI; he learned how to control it and make it a powerful helper. His journey, with guidance from Pedro Cavalero’s e-book, “Effective AI for Enterprise Development Teams,” shows how you can turn AI from a source of worry into your biggest advantage.

Learning to Work With AI, Not Against It

When Fabio first started using Cursor, it was like having a very fast, very eager assistant who sometimes didn’t understand the full picture. He said, “Cursor, it suggests creating templates in the rules documentation directory.” At first, this was a bit confusing.

A big lesson came early. Cursor helped him fix a complex problem in “minutes” that would have taken him “a couple of days.” Amazing! But, he also “ran out of his free request quota.” This taught him: AI is powerful, but if you let it “go crazy and try to solve everything by itself,” it can become “obsessed with finding the solution” without your expert guidance. This can be costly and not always the best way to work.

The E-book: A Clear Path Through the AI Jungle

The real change for Fabio came with Pedro Cavalero’s e-book. The book explains a clear process: don’t just tell AI what to do. Teach it how your team works. This means creating an “AI Knowledge Base.” You can even use AI to help write down your team’s coding rules, how your software is built (its architecture), and even how you test.

Fabio realized, “I hadn’t thought about what you said, about generating Cursor’s own rules, using Cursor, right?” The idea of “the tool to configure itself, based on your development preferences” was a breakthrough. AI wasn’t just for writing code; it could help define the best way to write code for his projects.

Fabio’s Simple Tips for Making AI Work for You (Inspired by “Effective AI”):

Fabio learned some important lessons that can help any developer. Here’s some practical advice:

  1. Use AI to Create Your Team’s “Rule Book”:
    • The Idea: AI (like Cursor) can look at your team’s best code. It can then help write down the rules for good coding style, project structure, and common ways of doing things.
    • Fabio’s Words: “It went there and created a template, right? I imagine if I create a second endpoint, it will take this template and it will be, like, ready. I won’t have to ask three, four, five questions.”
    • How to Do It: Ask Cursor to look at your good code and create draft documents (like python_style_guide.md). Your team then checks and improves these documents. Store these “rules” where Cursor can easily find them. Now, AI knows your team’s way.
  2. Guide the AI – You Are the Boss:
    • The Idea: Sometimes AI needs clear instructions, like “holding its hand,” especially for new or complex tasks.
    • Fabio’s Words: When fixing code style (ESLint) issues, he learned to guide it. For new code, he’d show it similar existing code and ask it to organize things clearly. “I’d like you to organize, suggest a better way to organize this code… App.js should only take care of the server and application setup.”
    • How to Do It: Don’t just ask for code. Ask AI to explain its ideas. Show it good examples from your project. You are still the expert.
  3. Commit Your Code Often – It’s Your Safety Net:
    • The Idea: AI makes things fast, but don’t forget basic good habits. Saving your work (committing) frequently is more important than ever.
    • Fabio’s Words: “When the AI gets lost, it’s very difficult to go back to the last point where you were. I actually restarted a couple of times because I hadn’t committed. I would forget to commit.”
    • How to Do It: After AI helps make changes, save (commit) them. This way, if AI makes a mistake, you can easily go back. Fabio says, “Please, really reinforce the importance of the commit… the commit becomes a central activity.”
  4. Use Tests to Check AI’s Work:
    • The Idea: AI can sometimes change things you didn’t expect. Good tests will catch these mistakes.
    • Fabio’s Words: While fixing one problem, AI sometimes changed other things, and “then the tests started to break… You see it was a snowball effect, right?”
    • How to Do It: Ask AI to help write tests for the code it creates. Always run your tests after AI makes changes to be sure everything still works correctly.
  5. Give AI Clear Context (Tell It What to Look At):
    • The Idea: Tell AI exactly which files or parts of your code it should focus on.
    • Fabio’s Words: He noticed AI sometimes made changes based on a wider view of the project, not just the part he was working on.
    • How to Do It: In Cursor, use the @ symbol to point to specific files or code sections. Always check the changes AI suggests before you accept them.

Your New Role: Guiding AI, Designing Systems

Fabio’s experience changed his view of his job. He’s no longer just a coder; he’s becoming an AI guide and a system designer. The fear of AI replacing him is gone. Instead, he’s excited.

“All of us are going to become, from now on, every engineer will become a system designer… or system designer / project manager,” he says. You’ll spend less time on small coding tasks and more time on big-picture thinking, problem-solving, and making sure AI works with your team’s best practices. He adds this new role is “more pleasant than micromanagement or things related to managing people, which is more complicated.”

The worry about AI has shifted to thinking about “which skill is more important.” Yes, coding is important. But knowing how to guide AI, using a clear process, is becoming a super-skill.

You Can Do This Too: Start with the “Effective AI” E-book

Fabio’s story shows that you don’t need to be overwhelmed by AI. With the right approach and tools, you can make AI your most powerful assistant. The key is having a clear process, like the one in Pedro Cavalero’s e-book. It teaches you to build an “AI knowledge base” so AI understands your way of working.

A clear, documented process makes communication with AI (and your team!) much easier for everyone.
