Overcome Coding Content Hesitations: Yolande’s Advice to Share Your Journey Now!

Sometimes the biggest challenge we face as aspiring international software engineers, when it comes to building an online presence and sharing our work, is simply taking that first step. We can get caught up in doubts, perfectionism, and the fear of not being “expert” enough. But during our recent chat, Yolande Poirier offered some really encouraging words to help us break through these barriers.
Yolande emphasized that “don’t overthink the planning! Can have a rough timeline/outline, don’t have to be too strict with it.” It’s perfectly fine to start with a general idea for a blog post, a code snippet, or a tutorial and let it evolve as you go. You don’t need to have everything perfectly planned out before you start sharing.
She also advised us to “go for whatever is easy. There is no point in torturing yourself. Don’t go to places you think are hard.” Start with what feels comfortable and manageable for you as a software engineer. Maybe it’s sharing a small code snippet you’re proud of, writing a short explanation of a concept you just learned, or engaging in a discussion on a technology you’re passionate about. Every small contribution counts.
If you’re worried about the quality of your code or your writing skills, remember Yolande’s perspective: “The quality of the content is not always the most important. The quality of your network is more important.” Focus on connecting with other engineers, sharing your learning process, and being authentic.
Most importantly, Yolande stressed the long-term nature of building your career and online presence: “Don’t give up! Find the time to do it: things don’t happen immediately, but they do work.” Building a successful international software engineering career and a strong online presence takes time, consistent effort, and a willingness to learn and share. Be patient with yourself and keep coding, keep learning, and keep sharing!
