From Brazil to Toronto: A Developer’s First Year in Canada
Ever wondered what it’s like to pack up your life and move to a new country for a tech job? It’s a journey filled with excitement, challenges, and a whole lot of learning. I’m going to share a bit about my own experience moving from Brazil to Toronto, Canada, and what my first year has been like.
A New Chapter and a New Climate
I’m a Senior Software Engineer with about 20 years in the game, and I recently relocated to Toronto to work with super.com. It was a big move, not just for my career, but for my family. As you can imagine, leaving behind the familiar for the unknown is a huge step.
One of the biggest changes? The weather. I arrived at the end of summer, just in time for my first real Canadian winter. For someone who had never experienced a winter like that, it was, as I put it in a recent chat, “kind of scary.”
Pedro: “When I got here, it was almost fall, and then I got my first winter. For someone who’s never had a winter like that, it’s kind of scary. We need to learn all the stuff about winter, like how to put on the right clothes and which clothes to wear.”
It’s funny because you don’t realize how much you have to learn. It’s not just about putting on a heavy coat; it’s about layering, knowing what materials to wear, and even figuring out when schools might close because of heavy snow. It was a whole new world for us!
The Little Things
Beyond the weather, there are so many small cultural differences and new experiences. From trying new foods to navigating a new city, every day is an adventure. It’s been an incredible journey of growth, both personally and professionally.
Moving to a new country is a big decision, but it’s also an amazing opportunity to expand your horizons. Have you ever considered working abroad? What’s holding you back?
