Stop Chatting, Start Building: Level Up Your Coding with AI Agents

Hi team,

AI is transforming the way we work, and software development is no exception. But are you using it to its full potential? Many developers are stuck in a loop of asking a chatbot for code snippets and then copying and pasting. It’s time to level up and start using AI as a true development partner.

The Problem with “Vibe Coding”

The term “vibe coding” has been floating around, and it describes the process of just asking an AI to generate code without much thought or review. While it might seem fast, it’s a dangerous practice. As I said in a recent discussion, if you’re not carefully reviewing the code, you’re coding blind.

Pedro: “If you’re just ‘vibe coding’ and not looking at your code, you are just ‘blinding coding.’ And this will fire back eventually.”

As a professional software engineer, you are responsible for the code you commit. You can’t blame the AI if something goes wrong. That’s why it’s crucial to have a solid development process that includes rigorous code reviews, even when using AI.

From Chatbot to Agent: A New Way of Working

Instead of just using AI as a chatbot, we need to start thinking of it as an agent that can actively participate in our workflow. This is what I call “Level 3” AI adoption. An AI agent can analyze your existing code, write new code, run tests, and even suggest improvements, all on its own.

But to get to this level, you need to provide the AI with the right context. This is where “context engineering” comes in.

Pedro: “That is why you have to bring enough context for that tool. Then you need to do all this ‘context engineering,’ and then you can use any agent you want.”

By giving the AI your project’s architecture, coding standards, and testing strategies, you can empower it to generate code that is aligned with your team’s best practices. This is how you unlock the true power of AI and achieve massive productivity gains. I’ve seen it in my own work—I’m writing five times more code, and it’s all running in production.

Are You Ready to Build with AI?

AI is not here to replace us, but it is changing the way we work. It’s a powerful tool, but only if you know how to use it correctly. It’s time to move beyond simple chatbots and embrace a more sophisticated, agentic approach to AI-powered development.

How are you using AI in your daily work? Have you started experimenting with AI agents? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

Cheers,

Pedro Cavalero
