OpenTelemetry: The New Standard for Modern Observability

Hi team,

If you’ve been working with distributed systems lately, you’ve probably heard of OpenTelemetry (or OTel). But why is everyone talking about it, and why should you care? Today, let’s break down why this standard is changing the game for developers.

The Problem with Vendor Lock-in

For years, we’ve relied on great tools like New Relic, Datadog, or Dynatrace. They work “out of the box,” which is awesome. But there’s a catch: they can get very expensive, and once you’ve instrumented your code with their specific agents, it’s really hard to switch to another provider.

Enter OpenTelemetry

OpenTelemetry is a set of open-source standards and tools that unify how we collect metrics, logs, and traces. It doesn’t matter which backend you use; you instrument your code once using the OTel standard, and you can send that data anywhere.

Thiago explained the origin of this project:

Thiago: Companies created an organization to define a pattern and a standard so we can treat this data across different vendors in a similar way. OpenTelemetry is a combination of OpenCensus and OpenMetrics. It offers the three basic things for observability—metrics, logs, and traces—all in a single standard.

It’s Both a Standard and a Solution

One of the coolest things about OTel is that it’s not just a document with rules; it actually provides the tools you need. It includes:
– SDKs: Libraries for your favorite languages.
– The Collector: A standalone service that receives telemetry data, processes it, and sends it to your chosen backend.

Why Should You Switch?

Because it gives you freedom. You can start with a free open-source backend and move to a paid vendor later (or vice versa) without touching a single line of your application code. You just point your Collector to a different address.

Closing Thoughts

OpenTelemetry is becoming the “USB port” of telemetry data. It’s universal, powerful, and completely free to use.

Are you still using proprietary agents, or have you made the jump to OTel? Share your experience below!

Happy coding!

Cheers,
