The 7 Pillars of a Powerful Developer Reputation
Hey fellow devs!
In the last post, we introduced Bruno Souza’s simple but powerful formula for career growth: REPUTAT / IO2N. Now, let’s dive into the top part of that fraction. These are the seven pillars you need to actively build to create a strong, positive reputation.
R is for Responsibility
This is all about stepping up and taking ownership. Don’t shy away from the hard problems; seek them out. The more you take on, the more you learn and the more you are seen as a problem-solver.
Bruno: The more responsibility you take, the more interesting problems you’re going to solve.
E is for Expertise
This is the foundation. You can’t build a solid reputation on shaky ground. Your skills are your currency. You don’t have to know everything, but you need to be good at what you do and always be learning.
Bruno: You cannot have a reputation if you have no skills.
P is for Purpose
Why do you do what you do? Having a clear purpose or a “why” gives you direction. It helps you decide what to focus on and what to say “no” to. It’s the compass that guides your career.
Bruno: You have to have a clear purpose. You have to have a reason why you’re doing what you’re doing.
U is for Uplift
Your reputation isn’t just about you. It’s also about how you help others. Be a giver. Share your knowledge, mentor others, and help your teammates succeed. A rising tide lifts all boats.
Bruno: You have to help other people to grow, to uplift themselves. You have to be a giver.
T is for Take Action
Ideas are great, but execution is what matters. A reputation is built on what you do, not what you say you’ll do. Be a person of action, and let your results speak for themselves.
Bruno: There’s no reputation for people that just talk. People that just talk and don’t do things have a very bad reputation, in fact.
A is for Autonomy
This is about having the freedom to make decisions and do the right thing without being micromanaged. But it’s a two-way street. You earn autonomy by being reliable and consistent.
Bruno: If you don’t have a lot of autonomy, you’re just doing what other people are telling you to do, and that’s hard to build a reputation on. But if you have a degree of autonomy, then you can do the right things.
T is for Trust
Trust is the glue that holds everything together. People need to believe in you and your abilities. This is built on visibility and reliability. You can’t trust someone you don’t know or someone who isn’t consistent.
Bruno: Reputation is what people believe about you. The more they trust you, the higher your reputation is. I cannot trust someone that I don’t know or have never seen anything from.
Conclusion
These seven pillars are the building blocks of a great career. They are all interconnected and support each other. By focusing on strengthening each of these areas, you’ll be well on your way to building a reputation that opens doors.
