3 Career Traps That Can Silently Wreck Your Reputation

Hi everyone,

We’ve covered the seven pillars for building a great reputation. But just as important as what you do is what you don’t do. In his REPUTAT / IO2N formula, Bruno Souza highlights three key traps that can silently destroy your credibility. Let’s look at the “IO2N” in the denominator—the things you need to minimize.

I is for the “I, Me, Me” Focus

We all know this person. The one who turns every team success into a personal victory. The one whose favorite subject is themselves. While it’s good to be proud of your work, constantly seeking the spotlight makes you look insecure.

Bruno: Everyone knows that person who always talks about themselves: ‘I did this, I did that.’ People who talk too much about themselves often do it because they have to put themselves up, because they actually don’t have the expertise.

True experts don’t need to constantly remind you they’re experts. Their work speaks for itself. Let your contributions be your confetti.

O2 is for Outright Lies

This one is simple but critical. Don’t lie. Ever. A single lie can erase years of trust-building. Your reputation is built on people believing what you say. Once that’s gone, it’s incredibly difficult to get back.

Bruno: Always tell the truth, or at least don’t lie. Lies are a career-destroying reality. If you lie and people realize you’re lying, they stop trusting you.

Honesty is always the best policy, even when it’s uncomfortable. It shows integrity and builds long-term trust.

N is for Negativity

Negativity is more than just being pessimistic. It’s being the person who always finds fault, who shoots down ideas, or who constantly corrects others on minor details. It’s draining to be around, and people will start to avoid you.

One of the most dangerous forms of negativity is hiding behind the excuse of “just being honest.”

Bruno: Be careful of people who hide behind the truth. They are negative and hurtful just to be right, just to show that they are right and you are wrong. That’s not a good person to be.

There’s a huge difference between giving constructive feedback and just being critical. Choose to be constructive.

Conclusion

Building a great reputation is as much about avoiding the pitfalls as it is about building the pillars. By steering clear of the “I, Me, Me” focus, dishonesty, and negativity, you protect the valuable reputation you’re working so hard to build.
